ON THIS DAY~APRIL 24

1979  Nicolle Michelle Caouette Born at 8:15 pm

It was on this day many many moons ago, when I was sitting in a position similar to the way I am now when you were born.  Yes, I was swearing like a sailor and chucking ice at the nurses as I felt like I was sitting on a box of dynamite.

But, it was all worth it, because this was the day you were born my dear, an 8 lb baby girl.  Now you could have waited until I got up to the labor and delivery rooms.   No, you were so anxious to come into this world you were born in the wheelchair on the way.

The nurses learned and important lesson that day ~ When a Mom-to -Be says 'I think the baby is coming NOW', SHE means NOW!

I love you heart of my heart, always Mom

1800  Library of Congress, the Largest Library in the World Was Established

President John Adams approves legislation to appropriate $5,000 to purchase "such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress," thus establishing the Library of Congress. The first books, ordered from London, arrived in 1801 and were stored in the U.S. Capitol, the library's first home. The first library catalog, dated April 1802, listed 964 volumes and nine maps. Twelve years later, the British army invaded the city of Washington and burned the Capitol, including the then 3,000-volume Library of Congress.

Former president Thomas Jefferson, who advocated the expansion of the library during his two terms in office, responded to the loss by selling his personal library, the largest and finest in the country, to Congress to "recommence" the library. The purchase of Jefferson's 6,487 volumes was approved in the next year.

1916  Easter Rebellion Begins

On this day in 1916, on EasterMonday in Dublin, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, a secret organization of Irish nationalists led by Patrick Pearse, launches the so-called Easter Rebellion, an armed uprising against British rule. Assisted by militant Irish socialists under James Connolly, Pearse and his fellow Republicans rioted and attacked British provincial government headquarters across Dublin and seized the Irish capital's General Post Office. Following these successes, they proclaimed the independence of Ireland, which had been under the repressive thumb of the United Kingdom for centuries, and by the next morning were in control of much of the city. Later that day, however, British authorities launched a counteroffensive, and by April 29 the uprising had been crushed. Nevertheless, the Easter Rebellion is considered a significant marker on the road to establishing an independent Irish republic.
