Mau'i Mother
I took Mau'i to the Cat Doc yesterday. There are 2 veterinarians across the street who only do cats ~ The Cat Hospital. When I called Sandy to ask her .... to ask Hillbilly Bobby to unlock the back gate she asked, " Are you really going to keep that kitten?" I guess she said this because I am now investing money in Mau'i. When I replied yes, she said, "Well, I guess you just have to have something to MOTHER something, don't you?" The remark caught me a little off guard.
Last night I thought about it & thought that maybe it wasn't so bad. Maybe I do like to mother. My daughter gave me a book a couple years ago. I believe the title was "What is your Life's Purpose?". I read parts of the book and never came up with an answer. Yes, I'm a nurse...occupation. Yes, I'm a Mom ... but, does that define me?
Last night when I was thinking about what Sandy said I thought "So What? I enjoy being a good OB/Pediatric/Neonatal nurse, an educator, mother and someone who cares about social injustice. Then it hit me ... my purpose IS to "Mother". Not just my children, but to help give young Moms a good birth experience by providing advice and information. And to help new Mom's understand child development normal & abnormal to alleveate anxiety and nurture their children. In my private life, my kids are my priory. Grown now, I don't give advice unless asked because I raised them to be indepentdent and responsible individuals. Now I'm not out to save every dog, kitten or squirrel baby, but I can give a good loving life to the two have. One born in a Puppy Mill, the other Feral. So yes, I Mother and it's good.
Maui's exam showed that she has Round worms. No surprise there... (Jazzy actually had Round & Hook worms when I got her. And she had been "dewormed". Mau'i does have swollen glands & a slight case of conjunctivitis. Both symptoms, the Vet explained, from Herpes passed on from the mother cat. For the Herpes I was given medicine to put into her food to boost her immune system (for a month) and Gentamycin eye drops. AND Ohhh, she weighs 3 lbs. 1 oz., 1.4 Kgs!
The tech's and the Vet couldn't believe she hadn't had any human contact before last week because she was so good letting the Vet examine her, she explored the office and purred so loudly the Vet couldn't hear her heart sounds. When he picked her up she went limp in his hands as she does with me. He said that is a sign that she will be a really good pet & should have no trouble adapting to the family. But we already knew this didn't we?
I was given freebies of a 5 lb bag of "Kitten Kibble", a tube of Revolution, a weight chart, immunization record, and a bunch of kitten info. We are going to do the immunizations next month. Deworming, taking care of the eyes & swollen glands are what needed to addressed this visit. The Vet was empathetic to my finacial issue and didn't push having the immunizations this visit. I know that if I took her to Jazzy's Vet (and he has a bit of an attitude) he would have made me feel like shit not giving her shots RIGHT NOW.
So all is good. I'm going to pick up a ball for her to play with tomorrow & who probably some other goodies. Poor Jazz gets jumped on, her tail and paws are tickle when she sleeps by the kitten. So kitten Lickin' needs some more distractions.
Monday night Mau'i was looking for teats as Jasmine slept. She actually put her head between Jazzy's front legs looking for milk. Jasmine was spayed when she was 4 months old & has no clue what this is all about, no mothering instinct, and definitely no teats.
But, it was so cuuuute!
Thank you Chris!

I thought so what, too! Mothering is good and more of us should be proud of it!!! Yay for you! I am so happy that you found Maui and she found you!!! Yay!
be well,
Dawn
Nothing wrong with mothering. Everyone needs to be needed by someone or something. It's the human condition. You are doing a good thing both in your career and in your home. Hugs, Joyce
Good job identifying yourself. It's more than kittens and babies, it's a major attitude about the world you live in and the people in it. Good for you.

the herpes from the cat can they be transmitted to a human
It's a females nature to nurture....make the nest and filling that nest with things to love...no insult intended I'm sure.
So-Kitten Lickin is a cute nickname for Miss Mau'i.

Awwwww, so cute...I'm so glad that you got her, Bethe!!! She's a lucky little girl having a mom like YOU!!
My cats' favorite toys are NOT the ones I buy them.....they LOVE the little plastic zip things from the gallon milk bottles I buy!! They are all over my house and provide hours of entertainment for both of my cats!! They also like toys with feathers!!
Hugs,
Carol
Finding a vet that is not only good with your animals but sympathetic is a rare treat. I finally found one for the strays, although he's a 45 min. drive away he's perfect. He's a country doctor who has a no nonsense approach to taking care of cats. He actually donates his Saturdays to spay feral cats.
As for the mother instinct...I can see it in what your saying. It makes for great pet owners (winks)...(Hugs) Indigo
I am happy to hear you like the vet and he isn't one of those who will guilt a person into doing procedures and/or vaccs on the spot. I am glad she is a healthy little girl overall and amazed at how wonderfully she has made the transition from wild child to your little baby.
xx

My greatest and most rewarding pleasure in my life has been being a mom and grandmother.......... I have to mother also......... hey, we could be doing worse things........ lolol Sherry
I love being the mother to my kids, and my pets. I'm so glad your new kitten is doing so well.

She is such a pretty kitty! Nothing wrong at all with loving to "mother." I consider it being a nurturer. I think it keeps us feeling younger and happier. My oldest takes her cats to a kitty doctor who is far cheaper than the regular vet. I'm glad Maui is getting along so well. WTG, Mama...lol. Hugs, Chris
Maui is so cute, I'm mum to my two cats and love it an odd comment for your friend to make. Glad everything went ok with the vet, and also that she is now so friendly.
Take care
Yasmin
