Crotons in foreground~Plumeria in background
Sunday the temperature was a balmy 78 degrees.
Monday, we awoke to temps still in the 70's, but it became blustery and the temps fell through out the day. Thirty five degrees! I don't have heat in my place, my choice, I don't like the propane pilot light on in case it should be blown out by the winds. And there is always wind. An electric blanket does the trick of keeping me warm at night.
When I crawled out from under by Blankie this morning the temp has risen to 42 degrees. Some of the inland counties actually had freeze warnings which we usually have a few days a year, but never this late.
I was out with Jazzy, this afternoon and noticed that the Crotons are developing new foliage, as are the Plumeria.
YaY, Spring in Florida.
Crotons are found primarly in the Caribbean, and Plumeria, a native to central and South America, thrive here in Florida. If you have been to Hawai'i or Indonesia you may have thought the fragrant flowering plant is indiginous, but from what I've read it is native to Central and South America.

Other signs of Spring
Florida Feet ~ The permanent V shaped tan lines we Floridians develop from wearing flip flops all year 'round.
Crazy horny Lizards ~ I don't mean Horny Lizards, as in the species. I mean crazy, horny, sexy lizards. Heads bobbing up and down, scattering among the plants and grass as I walk by.
Soon there will be eggs the color & size of pearls under the foliage of my plants. Then tiny little rascals are everywhere. The wonderufl thing about lizards is that they eat the mahogany colored Palmetto bugs and misquitoes.

Love bugs~Don't they sound lovely? who COuld resiSt a love bug? Love bugs invade this country in the mid-1930's.
They spend 5-7 months of their lives as larvae in the leaf litter. Then the adults emerge synchronously twice a year (April-May and September - October) and can form large swarms that cloud the air.
Many people don't realize that these flies are actually invaders from Central America and have been working their way northward along the coast as far north as Wilmington, NC.
Swarming little pests are attracted to the warmth of the roadways where their acidic bodies damage the paint on vehicles.
My love bug peeve....they land on me while in mid forniction. If I ain't getting any, SWAT! Ain't no bug is getting any!
Toads ~ The toads dwell in the ground until the weather warms. They are brownish and come in all sizes from the babies the size of dimes to adults the size of a softball ball. When summer arrives it seems as if the world has been invaded by these giants. At night the dog and I will run along the back road her in the park and they scatter clumsily to get out of the way!

The Snow Birds are packing. YaY! It's nice to see them come, but it is nicer to see them go and finally get some elbow room in this small RV Park. Jasminee and I will have the back road to ourselves. April 1st is when the first wave of exodus occurs. A back up of traffic will occur as Motor Homes, Trailers, and 5th Wheels line up at the exit gate to find their way home to Ontario, Quebec, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania.
I will try to take photos this year, it's hilarious.

I've been itching to plant something. What can I put in pots on my porch and or patio that will thrive and that is hardy...I don't have much of a green thumb...as I found out with the palm I bought for the house when we moved in. It last about a month. :(
We've seen the frogs er toads...they were tons of them and so cute. Lizzards scatter every time I walk to the mailbox and are on the walls outside too!
Oh yeah! Can't beat spring in Florida! I'm so glad it's time for the snowbirds to start packing. It was flippin' freezing this morning!!! What's up with that? Usually Easter Sunday is our first official pool day -- not this year. Hurry up hot, sticky weather, I need my V tans! Martha :-)
I would love to see pics of that! Fleeing elderly! LOL I remember the love bugs on a visit one time... they are nasty! Eww... All over the place! And mahogany palmettos? Brown roaches... lol
be well,

The plant photos are nice! I would like to see lizard eggs. Take some pictures of the critters for me! Toads too! Linda
Thanks for the warning that the snowbirds are now on route to PA ;)
I had to laugh out loud (literally) about your love bug peeve!!!! You are so funny.
I am seeing the fields and yard turn a little greener, that is about the only sign of spring I am seeing. I wish it was in the 70's here, heck, I'd be happy with the 60's!
xx

Waiting for Spring to arrive here in Virginia. Still chilly.

Do love bugs ever NOT fornicate. Everytime I have ever seen them, they are ALWAYS trying to get their groove on! LOL
Angel

Derek
45 degrees what a heat wave pa. is having!
Let those Bugs Fornocate
Love those tropical plants. I have found that I cant kill those, so I have several! Love bugs, yes, well, we found out two years ago about those little buggers. Took the new truck down there, they were swarming. Stopped at a park reserve. They had a little eat outside joint. I thought I was going to get more protein from inhaling bugs than eating my sandwich...lol. I did manage to get them off of my truck grill. Man they STICK to your paint. It took forever to get them all off. They do in fact SUCK. I still love Florida though. :) I like lizards too. Hugs, Kelly
Very lovely photos. I love plants but doesn't seem to have much of a green thumb. However, I may try again now that spring is emerging here in the Carolinas.
Best Wishes
Gina
Bethe, I remember the lizards from when I worked in Sarasota. They are strange little things that seem to be everywhere, like the pigeons in New York City. I was always afraid I was going to step on one but never did. It took some getting used to.
We have to make room for the critters who live where we do. We have no choice. They're going to live and thrive there anyway. In my neighborhood it's squirrels, birds, opossums, ground hogs, sea gulls, ducks and crazy geese who fly back and forth in formation, making a lot of noise, but who don't migrate anywhere any more.
Spring is on it's way then ~ that's good for you xx Can you send it over here when you've finished with it ;-)

Spring is trying to get utself going here. Temps up in the Mid 60's during the day.
LOL...I'm super behind. 35 and 42 degrees? Wow, that is really cold for you. Love your bug description. I'm actually laughing at the toads because we went to Va. Beach just about every year when I was married. It creeped me out when I'd step on the toads there in my bare feet. EWWWW...they were so squishy. I'm taking it that it's warmed up since I'm days behind in my alerts? HUGS Chris
